Dear courageous protesters,
In spite of the extreme cold, We the People Dissent along with a very wide coalition of groups advocating for justice in Detroit (see flier on IG: https://www.instagram.com/p/DTwS2PVlAH2/) made the decision to host a rally in solidarity with Minneapolis which put a call out for a general strike and has asked major cities to rally with them, as well as everyone in our country, who is horrified by the federal crack down that the government is lashing out at the Minnesotans. Is there a need to remind you? Wednesday, January 7th, an American citizen, Renee Good, was killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This killing is part of a broader pattern of unchecked violence, impunity, and abuse carried out by federal immigration enforcement agencies against members of our communities, immigrants and non-immigrants.
A broad coalition of groups across the country is calling for a coordinated Ice Out For Good actions on Friday, January 23rd in solidarity for Minnesota, and to demand accountability, honor the life lost, and make visible the human cost of ICE’s actions.
Here, in Detroit, WtPD is partnering with multiple organizations, most of which lean on the left side of the political spectrum. Please expect speeches to reflect the diversity of groups, from moderate to far-left. At WtPD, we take everyone’s political sensibilities and affiliations very seriously, so we want to be transparent and avoid offending you. We do understand that one can be profoundly shocked by the murder of an American citizen, but not agree to socialist or communist organization of society. The rally will be primarily focusing on ICE’s crimes with a minor component demanding the end of US imperialism. A lot of people are very mad these days, so please expect language to be used and shouts of deep frustration to be heard. This is not to deter you to attend the rally by any mean. It is designed for you to know what type of rally you will be attending should you be there, which would warm up our heart. And we will need a lot of warmth as the temperature will be well below freezing. The coalition will have hand and feet warmers available, but please do layer up. We will keep the rally very short, about an hour, to avoid any incident due to the cold.
A core principle behind all ICE Out For Good events is a commitment to nonviolent action and no civil disobedience. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values, and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events. All events should be held in public spaces or on public property.
