Sen. Ed Markey

State: Massachusetts

Elected Office: U.S. Senator

Candidate District: MA-Sen

Reason for Endorsement:

Sen. Markey is a leader of the climate movement and a progressive champion for a more just, sustainable, and livable future. He consistently demonstrates progressive leadership and vision by prioritizing working people and marginalized communities, and we’re proud to endorse him for re-election.

Sen. Markey knows how hard it is for working families to get by because he’s lived that struggle. He wasn’t born into a wealthy, well-connected political dynasty, but to working class parents who often struggled to make ends meet. His upbringing is evident throughout his long record of public service: he governs with an eye toward the needs of the most vulnerable.  As a co-author of the Green New Deal, he has centered low-income communities and communities of color who have been hit hardest by climate change. He has pushed his colleagues toward a bolder response to the climate crisis and he has not backed down from his ideals even when criticized by his own party.

His response to the coronavirus pandemic not only put people first, but elevated bold ideas to directly address systemic failures that the virus exposed. Sen. Markey was a lead sponsor, along with Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris, of a bill to provide working-class families with emergency monthly payments of $2,000 for the duration of the pandemic. He fought for greater relief for small businesses, rather than unaccountable giveaways to large profitable corporations. And he was among the first to call on President Trump to activate the Defense Production Act and compel large companies to manufacture test kits, life-saving mechanical ventilators, and personal protective equipment for frontline medical workers.

Sen. Markey is a model progressive legislator: consistent, accountable, and ready to fight for a more equitable future. We are committed to fighting alongside him.
