Donald Trump’s presidency and attempts to steal the 2020 election have put into focus the cracks in our democratic system. That’s why In the 117th Congress, Democrats’ first order of business was introducing H.R. 1, the For the People Act, signaling that structural democracy reform is their number one priority. With our democracy in crisis, we need a robust reform package that targets voter suppression, gerrymandering, money in politics, corruption, and more.
H.R. 1 is an important first step towards building an equitable democracy, along with the D.C. statehood bill and John Lewis Voting Rights Act. Without a functional democracy in which everyone is included and represented, we can’t achieve any of our other progressive goals. All the issues we care about deeply: health care, immigration, ending wars, racial justice, climate change—fixing these things requires a democracy that is responsive to the people, not the powerful and wealthy.
While H.R. 1 passed the House in the 116th Congress, we cannot assume it will pass again without substantial grassroots pressure. With such slim margins in the House, we need all Democrats to commit to voting YES to H.R. 1 in its entirety when it’s brought to the House floor. Our democracy depends on it.
