**Special Safety Workshop – Safety Volunteers with area groups, please plan to attend and bring this back to your groups.**
#### Radio Communications for Nonviolent Direct Actions (NVDA) is a two-hour training workshop to help safety volunteers communicate clearly, calmly, and effectively during nonviolent direct actions using handheld radios and backup methods.
The session will cover how communication supports shared situational awareness, nonviolent discipline, and collective safety, especially under stress. Participants will learn a simple, consistent structure for radio use; how to prioritize urgent safety information; how to keep channels clear; and how calm voice and pacing can reduce confusion and escalation. The training will include hands-on practice with radios through realistic scenarios, giving everyone a chance to build confidence, practice good radio discipline, and experience how clear communication helps teams work together smoothly during actions.
Note: This training will be especially valuable for past safety volunteers who have previously been issued radios without formal training; the NonViolent Direct Action Marshal Training is not a prerequisite, but is strongly recommended before taking this class. Space is limited to first fifty registrants who, in turn, will commit to instructing their next safety team partner in best radio practices to the extent circumstances at upcoming NVDAs allow.
