led by Leslie Schultz, Tom Joyce, and Kim Pesenti
**Lunch is included.
Suggested donation of $20 – 30 to cover food costs and make a donation to local mutual aid for immigrant family and protection**
One of the main goals of this training is to help prepare people to participate in direct actions that respond to their goals for change in our culture and political life.
Some examples:
· Disrupting businesses that support brutality against immigrants and citizens,
· Interrupting/disabling unaccountable and non-democratic governance,
· Providing information so that people are aware of infractions by those who misuse power
These direct actions can, and don’t always, involve the risk of arrest for some of the participants and legal consequences.
The training is participatory and based in popular education models of learning.
The basic components of this 8-hour training are
· Building communication skills
· Basic concepts and understanding of nonviolence
· What is direct action/civil disobedience/civil resistance
· Affinity groups and their functioning in a direct action
· Consensus decision making process used in affinity groups
· Affinity group role plays with various direct-action scenarios*
· A session on fears and concerns that we have with direct action
· Brief overview of legal consequences
* If you have ideas of direct actions you would like to play out in practice, Please let us know!
*A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.*
