While Republicans across the country are engaging in some of the most brazen attacks on our democracy and our right to vote, two Democrats – Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin – joined Mitch McConnell in blocking what would have been the most consequential suite of democracy reforms since the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. As a result of Sinema and Manchin’s betrayal, the likelihood of constitutional crises, democratic breakdowns, and rightwing political violence are higher today than it was yesterday. That is their legacy now.
Today, Indivisible sent a “flash poll” by text message to Arizona Indivisible activists asking if they’d support a Democratic primary challenger to Senator Sinema in 2024, if she does not support fixing the filibuster and passing voting rights.
Indivisible announced its endorsement of three additional candidates for Congress. The announcement is the latest for the progressive grassroots organization, which endorses throughout each election cycle. The candidates are as follows: Marie Newman (IL-06), Mandela Barnes (WI-Sen), and Jamie McLeod-Skinner (OR-05).
Marie is a fighter for her constituents in Chicago’s suburbs and attempts to silence her through backroom redistricting deals will only make her fight harder. Marie is no stranger to taking on and beating political machines with the help of the grassroots. She’s the clear progressive choice and we’re proud to endorse her again.
This was the most important speech of Joe Biden’s presidency. He nailed it. A clear moral case and call to action. The vote is coming on Martin Luther King Day. The President wants it. The Speaker of the House wants it. The Senate Majority Leader wants it. The American people want it. It’s time to fix the senate, protect our democracy, and guarantee the right to vote. Time to get it done.
Our democracy is on a knife’s edge. It’s clear that Republicans will do nothing to protect our democracy, so Democrats must act alone to save it. We support and applaud Majority Leader Schumer’s decision to hold a vote to change Senate rules to pass critical voting rights and democracy reform legislation by January 17, and we urge all Senate Democrats to do whatever it takes to get it done.
I’m grateful to have learned from him and our entire Team Reid. Some of my most beloved friends, mentors and husband are all people I met and learned from while working on his team. His legacy inspires me and so many to stay in the ring to advance a more just democracy. Rest in power, Senator.
President Biden has a majority, and he has repeatedly promised that he will deliver the votes for Build Back Better. He is responsible for now getting this legislation across the finish line. Period. If it continues to stall, he must own responsibility for the results of his own actions. He must make good on his repeated promises to deliver the votes in the Senate to pass Build Back Better immediately.
