We applaud the House of Representatives for passing tonight’s resolution calling for Vice President Mike Pence and the cabinet to invoke their powers under the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and immediately remove Donald Trump from office. But even after last week’s deadly coup attempt where a mob, at Trump’s urging, stormed the Capitol with intentions of causing life-threatening harm to Members of Congress and the Vice President himself, we do not expect Pence to finally do the right thing for our country and stand up to his boss.
Four years ago, we wrote a guide to resisting Donald Trump, and it worked. We’ve defeated Trump. We’ve defeated his cronies. We won in Georgia and took the Senate. But the victory isn’t the election, it’s the legislation. Now, it’s time for us to defeat the forces that allowed him to rise—and that continue to threaten our democracy.
Congratulations to Indivisible groups and Georgians who helped make history tonight with the election of Senators-elect Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. There is no better indication of the seismic change happening across the country, but especially in the South, than what we just saw in the Peach State.
We simply cannot just wait for Trump to leave office as his threat level to our democracy continues to increase. The House of Representatives must draw up articles of impeachment immediately, move quickly to vote on them, and send them to the Senate for a speedy trial, where Trump must be convicted and disqualified from ever holding federal office again.
The House has shown they are ready to fight for a truly inclusive and healthy democracy. The Senate must now follow suit and move this legislation forward.
It should be obvious that this bill is still not a sufficient response to the current crises, and relief will be fleeting. What this bill will do is help people survive a bit longer, which is the bare minimum we should expect. Americans deserve more—and Republicans cannot be trusted to do anything other than prioritize corporations and the wealthy. Leaving them in power will only leave more Americans in poverty. We plan to keep fighting for the full and equitable recovery the people are demanding.
Indivisible strongly supports Rep. Jayapal and the Congressional Progressive Caucus in demanding that any COVID relief package include survival checks and enhanced UI.
