The Ultimate MAGA Default Crisis Messaging Decoder

Kevin McCarthy and the MAGA Republicans in the House are setting up a MAGA Catch-22: jamming through an extreme wish list of their toxic policies, or a MAGA Default Crisis. In true GOP fashion, they’ve given their plan a name that in no way accurately describes what it does (the “Limit, Save, and Grow Act”), in the hopes of tricking us into thinking they have our best interests in mind. But we can’t be so easily fooled. We know that MAGA is all about playing political games and that despite the name, this plan will hold our economy hostage and force us into a MAGA Default Crisis. This resource will decode what MAGA Republicans actually mean when they claim: 

• Their plan will “help lift millions of Americans out of poverty.” (no it won’t)
• They want to “protect Medicare and Social Security.” (no they don’t)
• They are taking “serious, responsible action” on the debt ceiling. (no they aren’t)

Decoding MAGA Lie #1: Their plan will “help lift millions of Americans out of poverty”

Not even MAGA Republicans are delusional enough to think that taking food off of tables, cash benefits out of pockets, and health insurance away from those who need it most actually lifts people out of poverty. But that’s exactly what their plan aims to do – stripping people in our communities of the critical support they rely on just to get by. 

If the MAGA majority gets its way, fewer people will qualify for these necessary federal programs and hundreds of thousands of families will be at risk of plunging into poverty.  

Decoding MAGA Lie #2: They want to “protect Medicare and Social Security”

MAGA Republicans can’t walk back the fact that they are on the record wanting to slash benefits for seniors. Their new plan might not explicitly spell out the threat it poses to Medicare and Social Security, but that doesn’t mean the threat is any less real or alarming. 

Speaker McCarthy and the MAGA majority are demanding massive funding cuts to federal programs and agencies,  which means that there will be delays and cuts to both Medicare and Social Security. This would be catastrophic for the millions of people who would bear the brunt of these irresponsible cuts, but MAGA Republicans don’t care. They’ve already put Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block by risking the default crisis in the first place!

Decoding MAGA Lie #3: They are taking “serious, responsible action” on the debt ceiling

We’ll admit it, Speaker McCarthy got one part right – throwing our economy into turmoil and putting our jobs and health at risk IS serious. But it definitely isn’t responsible. 

There is absolutely no reason that avoiding default has to be tied to these outrageous and disastrous demands. We should not, and will not, choose between pushing the economy to the brink of collapse or pushing hardworking families into poverty. The MAGA Republican plan is a non-starter for any reasonable policy-maker looking to take serious and responsible action to avoid default. By insisting on this bad-faith proposal, these extremists are driving us closer and closer to a MAGA Default Crisis.
