The Build Back Better Act will change lives, thanks to the Congressional Progressive Caucus

Washington — Following House passage of the Build Back Better Act on Friday morning, Mary Small, National Advocacy Director of Indivisible released the following statement:

“The House just passed a once-in-a-generation piece of legislation that delivers on long-standing Democratic priorities: lowering drug prices, expanding Medicare, affordable child care, paid leave, deportation protection and work permits for many immigrants, and historic investments in housing, home care, and climate. This is a landmark achievement, and once passed through the Senate, will demonstrate to the American people what’s possible when Democrats deliver. And the country has the Congressional Progressive Caucus to thank.”

“The only reason this bill is on its way to the Senate and to the President’s desk is because of the work of the Congressional Progressive Caucus -- their deep organizing, their strategic power, and their political courage.  Together, they developed their shared, cross-issue priorities. They negotiated fairly and compromised -- over and over -- to get to a final deal.

“Member by member, week after week, House progressives stood firm against incredible pressure, resisting corporate bribes that others accepted, ignoring cynical calls to give up on their priorities, and did the right thing by the people they serve. We know their constituents see that courage, and value that service. We know that when patients in their districts can finally buy the medications they need without worry, and parents can find childcare they can afford, their constituents will be there -- and Indivisibles will be there to help remind them.  Meanwhile, conservative members of the Democratic caucus spent months delaying, clearly demonstrating a willingness to sabotage Biden’s agenda. Their excuses were transparent. They showed their true colors, and we won’t soon forget.

“Now that progressives have steered the bill through the House,  the fight shifts fully to the Senate, where it will take all-hands-on-deck to make these game-changing programs a reality. President Biden has said he has the 51 votes needed to pass the bill. We look forward to seeing President Biden’s leadership in action alongside Majority Leader Schumer as they oversee the safe passage of this legacy-defining bill through the Senate as soon as the Senate is back from Thanksgiving recess. Indivisibles will be there.”
