Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible announced its endorsement of Rep. Marie Newman in the race for Illinois’ 6th Congressional District.
“Through her first term, Marie has been a reliable and consistent progressive voice, organizing her colleagues as a part of Congressional Progressive Caucus leadership and helping shape the Democratic agenda in 2021. She’s pushed for an inclusive recovery that delivers for working families and fought for President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda,” said Indivisible’s Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director Leah Greenberg. “Marie is a fighter for her constituents in Chicago’s suburbs and attempts to silence her through backroom redistricting deals will only make her fight harder. Marie is no stranger to taking on and beating political machines with the help of the grassroots. She’s the clear progressive choice and we’re proud to endorse her again.”
Since early 2018, local Indivisibles in Chicago’s Southwest side and surrounding suburbs began knocking doors and building grassroots support for Marie, animated by her commitment to bold progressive solutions as she took on a longtime, conservative incumbent. Though she came up just short, local Indivisibles never rested, swiftly endorsing her 2020 campaign and continuing their phonebanking, rallies, and canvassing. Indivisible’s national office supported this work with a textbanking program that sent voters 125,000 texts, direct mail that reached 58,000 voters, and digital advertising serving over 2 million impressions, aiding Newman in her upset victory.
“Marie Newman shares the values and priorities of the local communities represented in Illinois' 6th District. She advocates for healthcare for all, fair wages, reproductive rights, and respect and equal rights for all regardless of race, religion, gender, and/or sexual orientation,” said Abby McEntee of Indivisible La Grange Park/Indivisible Western Springs. “She has pragmatic ideas to boost small businesses, support infrastructure in the district, and create job training to plan for jobs of the future. Marie Newman represents the progressive values embraced by the Indivisible movement within the 6th District and has taken those values to Washington to fight for our communities.”
To earn Indivisible’s national endorsement, a candidate must clear a tough three-stage process that requires broad support from local Indivisible group members at multiple points. All endorsed candidates must have a strong progressive platform aligned with our movement’s values and the enthusiastic support of informed energized voters in their district.
