Washington, DC — Today, the Indivisible Project released the findings of a nationwide YouGov Blue poll that found 70 percent of voters oppose a war with Iran and 53 percent of voters, including 82 percent of Democratic voters, support Congress revoking the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force to require Trump to get authorization from Congress for new military actions. The online sample of 1,072 registered voters, fielded January 8 through January 10, has a margin of error of 3.9 percent.
“What we’ve seen from Trump’s recklessness and warmongering is that he can’t be trusted with an open-ended war authorization,” said Angel Padilla, Policy Director, Indivisible Project. “Members of Congress must do everything they can to prevent a new war with Iran and to instead encourage diplomacy. The results of this poll shows a majority of Americans — including 82 percent of Democratic voters — want Congress to pass Rep. Barbara Lee’s (D-CA13) bill to rein in Trump’s escalation with Iran and assert Congress’ rightful authority over the question of when America goes to war.”
Rep. Lee’s HR 2456 would repeal the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002, ensuring it can’t be improperly invoked in the future. Congress passed the 2002 AUMF to authorize military force against Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq.
“Article I of the Constitution gives Congress the authority to authorize and limit war. It’s long past time for Congress to follow Congresswoman Lee’s example and send a strong message that it’s taking back that Constitutional responsibility,” Padilla said.
Indivisible is currently urging constituents to call their members of Congress to ask them to support Rep. Lee’s H.R. 2456 and H.R. 5543, the No War With Iran Act, sponsored by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA17). Last week, it partnered with grassroots organizations on more than 350 events nationwide calling on Congress to assert its authority to say no war with Iran.
