Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible, the national progressive grassroots organization, released the following statement on the conviction in the Derek Chauvin trial:
“We are so relieved by the guilty verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin. It is a step forward in our fight to dismantle white supremacy and fix the broken justice system. We stop short of celebrating this verdict because the work is not done, the fight goes on. But today, we exhale.
“Justice is a world where George Floyd is still alive, watching his daughter grow up, where Daunte Wright is home with his family right now, where Black people in this country are free, are safe, are powerful. Justice is a world where Black lives matter.
“Justice should not be rare. Derek Chauvin shouldn't be an outlier. And unless there are fundamental changes in our system, Black people will continue to be killed, cops will continue to use excessive force, and justice will continue to be denied.
“Today, and every day, we recommit our fight to justice -- a fight guided by antiracism, working to dismantle the white supremacist laws and institutions that have allowed police to play judge, jury, and executioner for too long.”
