Washington, DC — Today, Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Director of Democracy Policy for Indivisible, issued the following statement after the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood, the landmark decisions that protected a pregnant people’s right to choose whether or when to carry a pregnancy to term:
“We knew this was coming, thanks to the truly heinous and cruel draft decision that leaked last month. But that doesn’t make today any easier. Especially not for those who need abortions, have had abortions, or might need an abortion in the future. It is one thing for women and people who can get pregnant to know that we occupy a second class status in this country, but it is something else entirely to see the Supreme Court write it down in black and white. Justice Sotomayor was right when she said that this Court – stacked with far-right extremists – will not ‘survive the stench’ of their decision today.
“Today’s decision is the culmination of a 50-year attack on abortion and women’s healthcare launched by right-wing groups deadset on stacking the Court with justices who would do their bidding. And today they did.
“Abortions are now illegal immediately in at least 22 states with ‘trigger laws,’ and almost assuredly more states will follow. But that doesn’t mean that abortions will stop. They will just become less safe. And all of us will have fewer constitutional rights than our parents and our grandparents, who now find themselves fighting the same fight they waged back in 1973.
“This is not over and not by a longshot. We refuse to allow these MAGA extremists in judicial robes to dictate our lives, and we cannot give them another chance to roll back any more of our rights. We must fight and win in November, we must codify Roe at the federal level, and then, critically, we must add four seats to the Supreme Court and protect ourselves from the Trump justices who would do us further harm.”
