Tell the House to Push President Biden to Lead in Passing a TRIPS Waiver NOW

Wealthy countries were able to jump to the front of the line to buy up the world’s limited supply of COVID-19 vaccines, while middle- & low-income countries have been forced to face a devastating surge of Delta variant cases with little to no vaccines available to their population.

This is because despite massive taxpayer investment, Big pharma owns the vaccine recipes, and they are spending billions convincing lawmakers to put their patents and profits before human lives.

That’s why a handful wealthy countries are actively blocking lower-income countries from being able to manufacture vaccines for their citizens. They are obstructing a temporary waiver of intellectual property rights (TRIPS Waiver) for the COVID-19 vaccines at the World Trade Organization (WTO). This is a huge injustice!

To put it simply, in order to end this pandemic, we need to ensure every country can vaccinate a majority of their people. If we continue to allow wealthy countries and big pharma to maintain a vaccine monopoly while driving up prices, millions of people will die, more variants will develop, and the endless cycle of public health crises will continue.

After months of grassroots advocacy earlier this year, the Biden Administration finally reversed a Trump-era stance and supported the TRIPS Waiver—which was a huge victory in this fight! BUT despite the U.S. and over 100 other countries supporting it, it has been over a year since South Africa & India submitted a proposal to temporarily waive the TRIPS agreement and still negotiations are stalled.

We need President Biden to demonstrate that the U.S. is actively leading the fight to immediately pass an equitable and effective waiver of IP rights for COVID-19 vaccines and treatment at the WTO! Lip service is not enough.

Indivisible has always been clear that constituent’s strongest point of leverage in executive advocacy is through your Member of Congress. So call your member and tell them you want them to push the Biden Administration to use every strategic tool the administration has to negotiate and pass an equitable TRIPS waiver now! The WTO is planning to meet for the 12th Ministerial Conference on November 30th and passage of the TRIPS waiver must be the top priority.

Negotiate and pass an equitable TRIPS waiver now!

Hello, I’m a constituent from [part of state] and I want [Representative] to push the Biden Administration to actively lead at the World Trade Organization in passing a TRIPS waiver for COVID-19 vaccines and treatments.

We will not end this pandemic if Big Pharma and the wealthiest countries continue to be gatekeepers for the COVID-19 vaccine while driving up prices for some of the poorest countries in the world.  President Biden supported the waiver and needs to lead the way to immediately pass an equitable and effective waiver at the WTO now.

Will [Representative] commit to pushing the Biden Administration to use every strategic tool they have to get this done before the WTO Ministerial Conference in November?  I’ll be watching to ensure my representative moves quickly to fight for equitable global access to COVID-19 vaccines and treatments.

THANK YOU! Created with Sketch. THANK YOU!

Your call in support of equitable global vaccine access makes all the difference! Call as many times as you can today and tell all your friends to call as well!
