  • Indivisible on Virginia Supreme Court Overturning Redistricting Referendum

    May 8, 2026

Washington, D.C. — Today Leah Greenberg, Co-Executive Director of Indivisible, released the following statement after the Virginia Supreme Court overturned the results of the state’s redistricting referendum approved by voters last month:

“Today’s ruling is a devastating blow to democracy in Virginia, a blatant rejection of the will of the voters, and a chilling preview of how Republicans will seek to undermine the 2026 midterms. After Virginians participated in a hard-fought referendum and the state spent millions to carry out the election, the court has now stepped in to nullify the outcome because Republicans could not win politically what they were determined to block in court. It is abundantly clear from this ruling that the courts will not save us. If these justices are comfortable overturning a free and fair election and refusing to uphold the will of the people, they should be removed from the bench.

“This decision comes amid a broader national effort by Republicans and right-wing operatives to manipulate the rules of democracy whenever fair representation threatens their grip on power. Republicans from Alabama to Louisiana are attempting to strip power away from voters in a desperate effort to drag the South backwards towards Jim Crow. Following the disastrous Louisiana v. Callais decision, this ruling is yet another attack on a multiracial, representative democracy — part of a coordinated effort to silence voters, entrench minority rule, and shield extremist politicians from accountability.”
