William Lawrence is an East Lansing-born community organizer and progressive coalition builder running to bring affordability back to his home district, Michigan’s 7th. As a founder of the Sunrise Movement, Lawrence’s advocacy was pivotal in passing the largest green jobs program in U.S. history under Biden’s administration. Since this victory, Lawrence has continued to lead winning campaigns focused on housing and environmental justice.
Seeing a need for organized people power, Lawrence returned to Lansing after college to build issue-based coalitions that have since grown into statewide forces. He co-founded the Mid-Michigan Tenant Resource Center and helped lead the “Rent Is Too Damn High” coalition which has won statewide funding and resources for low-income renters.
Lawrence’s fight for Michigan’s 7th is driven by his reverence for the people and place that raised him. Rejecting all corporate PAC, and AIPAC dollars, Lawrence’s vision for our politics’ future puts people over profit. That’s also why Lawrence is unafraid to champion bold solutions to today’s growing healthcare, labor, and housing crises—Medicare for All, stronger union protections, and a housing-first approach.
