  • Supermajority of State Wide Indivisible Michigan Members Vote to Endorse Abdul El-Sayed for Senate

    Jun 30, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Indivisible announced its endorsement of Abdul El-Sayed in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Michigan. Last week, Chuck Schumer endorsed Haley Stevens in the Michigan Senate race. In a vote taken over the weekend, an overwhelming supermajority of Indivisible members in Michigan voted to endorse Abdul El-Sayed, with an endorsement from State Wide Indivisible Michigan and following 4 local Indivisible group endorsements across the state. Abdul El-Sayed is running for office in a time when democracy is under attack and the old playbook is no longer enough to meet the moment. As authoritarians target our communities, undermine our freedoms, and threaten the foundations of our democracy, voters are demanding a Democratic Party willing to fight back with urgency, clarity, and courage. That demand is shaping the future of the party — and it starts in the primaries.

The 2026 primaries present an opportunity to elect a new generation of Democratic leadership: fighters, not folders. These are candidates accountable to people, not corporate special interests or big money, and prepared to lead with the conviction this moment requires. Indivisible’s 2026 primary program is focused on backing leaders ready to confront authoritarianism head-on and turn the page on failed leadership by fighting — not folding — in the face of fascism.

“Abdul El-Sayed is the leader this moment demands. As a physician, public health leader, and lifelong Michigander, Abdul has dedicated his career to improving working people’s lives — from eliminating millions of dollars in medical debt for families to taking on polluters to remove lead pipes that harm children from elementary schools. He understands that the government should work for ordinary people, not corporations, billionaires, or well-connected political insiders. Meanwhile, his top competitor Rep. Haley Stevens has accepted campaign contributions from the private equity firms and energy companies driving up costs for Michigan families and built her campaign on support from AIPAC and the Democratic establishment. If you like Chuck Schumer and the status quo, Stevens is your candidate.

“As Michiganders see rising costs of living and health care, threats of data centers being built in their communities, and growing corporate influence over our politics, Abdul is offering something too rare in Washington: a willingness to fight. Abdul has built a grassroots movement focused on lowering costs, protecting communities, and taking on the powerful interests that have rigged the system against working people. Indivisible is proud to endorse Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate because he has the vision, record, and courage to challenge the status quo and deliver for Michiganders,” said Ezra Levin, Co-Executive Director of Indivisible.

“At Indivisible, our mission is to protect, defend, and promote democracy. In this moment, perhaps the single greatest threat to our democracy has been the prevalence of money in politics. Politicians on both sides of the aisle cater to corporate interests instead of working for the people they represent, and because of it, our lives are worse off. Abdul has spent his career in service to everyday people, and he rightly sees the incompatibility of seeking public office, yet being beholden to donors instead of constituents. From the beginning, Abdul’s values have been clear and consistent; he has always refused corporate donations and has made Money Out of Politics a centerpiece of his campaign. We believe Abdul stands above other candidates on this core issue. We know he will continue to work to improve democracy, so our voices are heard, and so government works better for all of us. We proudly endorse Abdul El-Sayed for Senate,” said Naomi Ernest, Group Leader of Saline Indivisible.

Indivisible endorsements start and end with the grassroots. Indivisible National is only endorsing candidates who are first endorsed by a local Indivisible group, and who receive supermajority support of Indivisible members in the district/state. No candidate who receives campaign donations from AIPAC, crypto, or the other funders of fascism is eligible for an Indivisible endorsement. All endorsed candidates represent a break with failed, status quo Democratic Party leadership and commit to driving toward a true opposition party in 2026 and beyond.

Saline Indivisible, Eastern Upper Peninsula Solidarity, Indivisible Courage Together, and Downriver United 734, and State Wide Indivisible Michigan all formally endorsed Abdul El-Sayed and recommended him to Indivisible for our national endorsement.

    Indivisible’s 2026 Primary Program

Last November, after Senate Democrats’ surrendered and voted to end the 41-day government shutdown without securing any commitments to lower health care costs or protect working families, Indivisible announced its largest primary program in the movement’s history. This program aims to turn the page on the failed leadership of Democrats like Senator Schumer, and identify and support fighters who will challenge feckless incumbents — to fight, not fold, in the face of fascism.

Indivisible is endorsing Abdul El-Sayed in the Michigan Senate primary race today. Previously this cycle, Indivisible has endorsed:

    • Will Lawrence and Donovan McKinney in the MI-07 and MI-13 Congressional races
    • Brad Lander and Darializa Avila Chevalier in the NY-10 and NY-13 Congressional races
    • Justin J. Pearson in the TN-09 Congressional race
    • Graham Platner in the Maine Senate race
    • Julia Gonzales in the Colorado Senate race
    • Peggy Flanagan in the Minnesota Senate race
    • Dr. Jasmine Clark in the GA-13 Congressional race
    • Robert Peters in the IL-02 Congressional race
    • Analilia Mejia in the NY-11 Congressional race
    • Randy Villegas in the CA-22 Congressional race

Indivisible will continue to work with local groups to support additional candidates in competitive primaries across the country. In the coming months, Indivisible will direct its network of activists, volunteers, and resources to help these endorsed candidates win their primaries, scaling phone banks, text programs, and canvassing efforts to unprecedented levels for the 2026 cycle.
Indivisible Action (PAC) channels grassroots energy into electing progressive candidates who will work towards an inclusive democracy that provides for the needs of all people. Indivisible Action provides tools, training and strategic guidance to local Indivisible groups as they flex their electoral power. Indivisible Action also makes its own endorsements of federal and gubernatorial candidates, grounded in endorsements made by local Indivisible activists.
