The No Kings Map is Live!
Hundreds of nonviolent protests are already planned for No Kings Day on March 28, and more are being added by the hour.
Please join us for a rally to defend democracy on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 19th. This event is not being promoted by Indivisible National, but here in Kona felt it was time to raise our voices (and signs) to remind everyone that we will not be silenced by this regime’s threats of violence and hate. So, in honor of MLK, and so many who helped him promote PEACE for JUSTICE, we are taking up his torch to shine the light of liberty in honor of him on his Birthday. We hope you will be there with us in person to show your solidarity.
This day shall be a joyous day of remembrance of those who came before us as they fought for liberty. We seek to gather like-minded folks NOW to celebrate our future potential for an America (and world) that is so much better than what we left behind. This day should remind folks: That EVERYONE is welcome here. That everyone must be treated with dignity and compassion. That all of us deserves to be respected by the ‘rule of law.’ That we truly are one people and one Earth. Let today be a day of remembrance and hope. Let us share our light, because sharing our light takes nothing from us, and yet lights the way for others to succeed. So today is not a day of anger, but one of celebration and hope for a brighter future for ALL.
Martin Luther King taught us that justice is worth fighting for and yet the most successful way to achieve it is through non-violence and respect for everyone.
Name of Event: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Rally
Type of Event: Rally and Food Drive
Date of protest: Monday, January 19, 2025
Time: 4-5pm
Location: The Queen Ka’ahumanu Hwy, south of Henry Street, behind the Mormon Temple Site (makai side)
Register here: https://www.mobilize.us/protecthawaii2025/event/840737/
Google Maps location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/zgn87Qp5yD6EAdiMA
Parking: We have on-site parking for 30+ vehicles. If possible, car-pool and arrive at least 30 – 45 minutes before the event, especially if you are dropping off food for the food drive. There will be parking for 30 vehicles in the grassy area, mauka of the Mormon Temple construction site. You can also park on the makai shoulder of the Queen Ka’ahumanu highway, past the “No Parking Anytime” signs, all the way down to Nani Kailua Drive or on Henry Street. If possible, park at Lowe’s or at Safeway and walk over.
In observance of the new “No Parking Anytime” signs, we will no longer have reserved parking spaces for handicapped parking on the shoulder, please use parking spaces on grassy area. We apologize for the inconvenience!
Please note: you can park after the event starts, just look for the orange cones on the highway and someone in an orange vest and flag waving you in.
Important: For safety reasons the Kona Police do not want people parking, standing or walking across the highway (mauka side) from our protest spot. Please stand behind the traffic lanes and cross the highway ONLY at Maluani Drive. The Kona police have been informed of our peaceful, non-violent protest and this is their only safety requirement. A permit is not required for this event.
What to Bring: We will have at least 40 extra signs, but feel free to bring your own. Our last protest rained heavily and destroyed our homemade signs, so we only have the printed signs now. It’s very hot in Kona on the highway and there’s often full sun, so wear sunscreen, a hat, and bring water. If you have a loud outdoor boombox bring that too and play your own tunes. If you are a drone operator and can take pictures and videos, please help us out with some coverage, but follow all respective laws, the Kona police believe that previous drone footage was not in compliance.
Food Drive: Let’s show support and solidarity for our cherished local migrant Latino community who have been intensely impacted by the illegal and cruel actions of Donald Trump. Let’s help ease the pain for migrants who have been displaced and traumatized by ICE on Hawai’i Island. We are all in this together!
