Washington, D.C. — Today, Mari Urbina, Managing Director of Indivisible Project, released the following statement celebrating the passage of Issue 1 in Ohio, an amendment to Ohio’s constitution that guarantees access to reproductive healthcare, including abortion:
“Tonight, we are elated by this pro-choice victory in Ohio and in awe of the voters and dedicated leaders on the ground who sent a clear message ahead of 2024: abortion access is non-negotiable. Community leaders, both on the ground and across the country, have worked tirelessly across generational, geographical, and political divides to connect with constituents, knock on doors, send texts, and register voters.
“MAGA Republicans tried every trick in the book to stop Issue 1 from passing. What the GOP seems to consistently overlook is that when abortion is on the ballot, their extremism will lose.
“Despite the odds and the obstacles voters faced, this election demonstrates the enduring belief in reproductive freedom, and that will always be stronger than the well-funded attempts to subvert it. As we head into the 2024 election cycle, we’re taking notes from this win in Ohio. Now we look ahead to Arizona and so many other battlegrounds where voters will be the firewall for our democracy. ”
Indivisible has been supporting leaders on the ground from Indivisible Central Ohio, Indivisible Appalachian Ohio, District 10 Indivisible for All (DIFA), Indivisible Strongsville, and the Ohio Progressive Action Leaders (OPAL) coalition, who have been working with a coalition of activists across the state on voter registration, phone and text banks, and Neighbor 2 Neighbor canvassing.
Indivisible joined this fight early on in July, supporting OPAL and Indivisible Central Ohio to shut down the ballot measure that would have amended the constitution to make it harder to pass future amendments to the Ohio Constitution, particularly aimed at stopping this amendment that will enshrine abortion access.
