Indivisible on House Passage of DHS Funding Bill: ‘Egregious failure of leadership.’

Washington, D.C. — Today, Ezra Levin, Indivisible’s Co-Executive Director, released the following statement on the House of Representatives passing the DHS funding bill that does not rein in ICE and Border Patrol:

“The House had a clear opportunity today to impose meaningful restrictions on ICE and Border Patrol, and it failed. As the Trump regime terrorizes our communities with masked federal agents and unchecked violence, Congress stood quietly by and passed a DHS funding bill that continues to funnel taxpayer dollars into ICE’s slush fund.

“Every representative who voted yes voted for more brutalization of our neighbors, more kidnapping of our children, more trampling of our rights, and more murder from this government. Passing this bill without any meaningful check on this lawless agency is beyond the pale. In an egregious failure of leadership, House Democratic “leaders” personally opposed the bill while declining to whip against it.

“Now, as the bill moves to the Senate, Democrats have a responsibility to draw a line. Putting actual guardrails on ICE is the bare minimum. Allowing Trump’s brutal secret police force to operate with essentially a blank check is unacceptable. Renee Nicole Good was not the first person killed by ICE, and without immediate, enforceable action to limit the power of DHS, ICE, and Customs and Border Protection, she will not be the last.

“Strongly worded statements are performative bullshit unless they’re followed with concrete votes. Every Senate Democrat should unite against this bill, and Senate leadership should make sure they do.”
