Brad Lander began his career of public service as head of an affordable housing nonprofit in downtown Brooklyn. Elected in 2009 by the New York City’s 39th district to represent them on the city council, Brad co-founded the council’s Progressive Caucus, served as Deputy Leader for Policy, and led critical and successful efforts to enact paid sick leave, a living wage for ride-share/for-hire drivers, and stable scheduling for fast food and retail employees.
In 2021, after his time on the council, Lander was elected as New York City Comptroller where he used his oversight power to provide a counterbalance to Eric Adams’ baser instincts. He successfully opposed Adams’ attempt to force retired public workers onto sub-par Medicare plans and repeatedly protested in support of low-wage, primarily-immigrant car wash workers.
Frequently arrested while participating in nonviolent protests, Brad’s June 2025 detention by ICE as he escorted an immigrant out of court prompted protests of its own, and made national news. As a candidate in that year’s mayoral race, Brad formed a cross-endorsement alliance with Zohran Mamdani and ultimately chose to drop out of the race, providing early support for Mamdani. Such willingness to prioritize movement strength and the common good over personal advancement has been the hallmark of Brad’s entire career.
Indivisible Brooklyn endorsed Brad Lander because, in the battle against fascism, we need leaders like him. We’re proud to stand with New York Indivisibles to support Lander in his run to be the next Representative for New York’s 10th district.
