UPDATE: a Federal Judge has ruled that the changes proposed by the USPS violate a settlement agreement with the NAACP, and blocked them from being implemented. While this probably won’t be the end of the case, it’s an important movement win and proof that fighting back against attacks on voting rights works!
The authoritarians are trying everything they can to limit absentee and mail-in voting, including trying to use the USPS to track which voters are “approved” for mail-in voting. And according to a plan the USPS quietly published in the Federal Register this month, if you’re not on their national list of “approved” voters, the post office won’t accept your ballot.
This change would place a tremendous burden on postal service workers, could delay or disrupt ballot distribution and return, and risks eligible voters being disenfranchised or not being able to return their ballots in time to be counted. Rural voters and communities with slower mail service are especially vulnerable.
We know there are pro-democracy lawyers who will fight in the courts to block this attack on our rights. For the rest of us – our job is to raise the alarm, throw sand in the gears, and make the case against this rule as clearly as possible. The USPS is currently accepting public comments on this “rule.” Let’s make sure their comments are flooded with pro-democracy, pro-voting messages to reject this rule! Lawyers can rely on those comments when suing to protect mail-in voting.
