Guest speaker Sheryl Kallivrousis is a resident of Colorado. In the past, she never paid attention to state legislation, but after finding organizations that mentor individuals in this process, she has overcome anxiety and become active in the state legislative process.
Learn how to “Engage with your State Legislature and Elected Officials”. You’ll learn about existing groups that you can join that are already doing a great job with this, such as the American Atheists and the League of Women Voters. Of course, you’ll be shown how to engage completely on your own.
You will be introduced to BillTrack50, a bill tracking platform, which makes tracking bills much easier. Filter bills using key words such as “abortion”. This makes it easier to track only the bills you’re interested in. For a deep dive on your bill, you’ll learn how you can listen to committee hearings (even days later at your convenience), or watch the entire Chamber of the Whole (House or Senate) debate on amendments ending with a final vote on your bill.
Finally, learn how to engage your elected officials using a great toolkit offered by Center for Common Ground and Workers Circle. Sheryl will share some of her personal experiences with visiting various elected officials.
