The Next Crisis is Now: Reading Mutual Aid by Dean Spade

Solidarity is one of the most important tools for supporting victims and building resilience; yet it is easier said than done. A lawyer, transgender activist, writer, and professor of law, Spade outlines in this book not only the nature of mutual aid but many of the pitfalls that activists encounter when trying to implement it.

In this book club, Dr. Drew Bergerson will lead a critical discussion about the practical opportunities and challenges for cultivating mutual aid in our life worlds today. Based on his own scholarship, he will warn against unrealistic expectations that lead to burnout and romantic notions of community. Our responsibility to stand with the victims lies, he will argue, not in utopia but rather in the work itself – in our ability to respond and the social capital we build in the process.
