Oregon has the second largest size of Data Centers by electricity consumption in the country. It is putting a huge strain on our electricity system with demand exceeding other industries. Climate emission targets will not be met. Water demand for cooling is also very high and a serious problem in drought-stricken Eastern Oregon. Decisions about land siting are often made locally without public input. Other issues of intermittent air toxics and 24/7 noise cause local residents to object. A few areas report higher wages and an economic boom, but the economic wins may be less than the tax exemptions they are receiving. The 2027 legislative session is shaping up to take on a lot of these issues. Join us to see where the issues are and how you can help!
Speaker: Dr. Catherine Thomasson is active in state climate policy as the lobby coordinator for MCAT – Mobilizing Climate Action Together. She served as executive director of Physicians for Social Responsibility in Washington D.C. from 2012 to 2017 and has worked on policy to address health impacts of climate change and toxins for over 20 years. She is a retired internal medicine physician.
