Join Third Act VA and Herndon-Reston Indivisible as we honor the late Congressman John Lewis with a Good Trouble Lives On Voting Rights Visibility Event on Saturday, July 18 | 11am-12noon in Tysons VA.
We are marking the sixth anniversary of the July 17, 2020 death of John Lewis, the champion of voting rights who put his life on the line on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama on March 7, 1965, as well as on many other occasions during his lifetime in fighting for the voting rights of all American citizens.
Let us never forget that voting rights are the hallmark of a democratic system and that John Lewis was among those leading that voting rights fight at a time when “We the People” did not mean ALL the People. We have moved closer to that goal, but we have never met that goal. However, WE REFUSE TO GO BACKWARDS.
So, as we face a concerted effort by the Trump Administration to undermine the hard-fought voting rights of our black and brown neighbors, as well as women, rural voters, etc. via the (so-called) SAVE Act, threats to send armed ICE agents to polling places, attacks on mail-in ballots, etc., WE MUST FIGHT BACK.
Let’s educate and engage our communities in the fight for our freedom to vote.
So please bring signs that express your outrage at these anti-democratic efforts to curb voting rights. We want the focus on this day at this protest to be on this issue.
This will be a peaceful but energetic protest, as well as a joyful celebration of the life of John Lewis.
And that is how we honor the legacy of the great John Lewis.
