SYNOPSIS:
In 2016, Donald Trump won the presidency with the support of 81% of evangelical Christians—a statistic that shocked the world. The Sins of Our Fathers is a feature-length documentary that uncovers the deep historical roots of this alliance, tracing them back to America’s original sin of slavery. Filmed in historic Charleston, SC, the film reveals how the white Christian church defended slavery, Jim Crow, and systemic racism through Biblical justification—threads that run right into our modern Religious Right movement. Narrated by an evangelical Christian and former lifelong Republican who voted for Trump in 2016, the film follows his personal transformation after a life-altering encounter in an overlooked historically Black neighborhood. The result is a powerful call for faith communities to face the past and reimagine America’s future.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
This film is more than just a story. It is a heart cry to the White Christian community that has wholeheartedly embraced a man who embodies everything we claim to stand against. It is a wake up call to a nation that is determined never to learn from our own history. Our goal is to help White America recognize and come to terms with all of the ways our dark racial past has bled directly into our present reality. And to open our eyes to see that there is a better way forward.
