Framingham residents are under surveillance
Imagine you notice a police officer is on your street every morning watching you and your neighbors come and go from your home. This same police officer is recording the address, the day, time, your license plate, the color, make and model of car, if you have a roof rack or sport wheels. Then you see that the officer is entering this into a computer tablet. You begin to wonder if the police are spying on you or investigating you.
Guess what, while the Framingham Police Department doesn’t have a police officer in your neighborhood, they have been using Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) cameras, doing the same exact thing and have been doing so since 2022.
ALPR cameras using AI technology convert the picture of your car and license plate into metadata text creating a vehicle fingerprint. This fingerprint can be used to track you in Framingham or in any other community using license plate readers.
There are somewhere between 80,000 to 100,000 ALPR cameras in use by police departments across the country. Go to https://www.deflock.org to see a map of where they are located. Framingham did not renew their contract with Flock Safety and are currently working with the vendor to get the 16 cameras removed.
