WASHINGTON, D.C. — In May, Inwood Indivisible formally endorsed Darializa Avila Chevalier, recommending her to Indivisible for our national endorsement. Shortly after, Indivisible endorsed Darializa Avila Chevalier in the U.S. House of Representative primary in New York’s 13th congressional district because at a moment when our communities are under attack, voters are demanding a Democratic Party willing to fight back. That demand is shaping the future of the party — and it starts in the primaries with candidates like Darializa Avila Chevalier.
Today, Darializa Avila Chevalier won her primary to officially become the Democratic nominee for New York’s 13th congressional district.
Darializa Avila Chevalier’s success in the primaries is a major victory for working people in New York City and for voters demanding a new generation of Democratic leadership. Darializa Avila Chevalier has overcome an incumbent Congressman with over 30 years in elected office who has continued to prioritize special interests over New Yorkers and millions in AIPAC spending aimed at attacking her and her candidacy. New Yorkers have made clear that it is time for elected officials who represent them.
“Across New York City, voters sent a clear message that the future belongs to leaders who are willing to challenge the status quo and fight for working people. By nominating Darializa Avila Chevalier, Democrats embraced a new generation of leadership — one prepared to take on powerful interests and meet this moment with the courage and urgency it demands.
“In New York’s 13th Congressional District, Darializa Avila Chevalier showed that organized people can still overcome organized money. Despite facing millions in outside spending, she built a campaign centered on the needs of her community and the challenges working families face every day. Voters chose her leadership over more of the same, signaling that New Yorkers are ready for bold new voices willing to fight for meaningful change,” said Ezra Levin, Co-Executive Director of Indivisible.
Indivisible’s 2026 Primary Program
Last November, after Senate Democrats’ surrendered and voted to end the 41-day government shutdown without securing any commitments to lower health care costs or protect working families, Indivisible announced its largest primary program in the movement’s history. This program aims to turn the page on the failed leadership of Democrats like Senator Schumer, and identify and support fighters who will challenge feckless incumbents — to fight, not fold, in the face of fascism.
Indivisible will continue to work with local groups to support additional candidates in competitive primaries across the country. In the coming months, Indivisible will direct its network of activists, volunteers, and resources to help these endorsed candidates win their primaries, scaling phone banks, text programs, and canvassing efforts to unprecedented levels for the 2026 cycle.
