  • Indivisible on Governor Jared Polis’s Decision to Commute the Sentence of Tina Peters

    May 18, 2026

Washington, D.C. — Today, Andrew O’Neill, Indivisible’s National Advocacy Director, released the following statement in response to Colorado Governor Jared Polis’s decision to commute Tina Peters’ sentence:

“By commuting the sentence of someone convicted of tampering with election systems to fuel Trump’s lies about 2020, Governor Polis is sending a dangerous message: if you attack our democracy and have enough political backing, accountability is optional.

“The fact that this decision comes as new details emerge about Trump’s attempt to create a slush fund to pay January 6 insurrectionists makes it even more indefensible. Tina Peters was convicted by a jury of her peers for abusing her office and compromising election security. The absolute worst thing Democrats can do right now is to validate the same election denialism and impunity we’ve spent years fighting against. Authoritarians do not stop their quest to erode democracy just because you kiss the ring. On this decision, Jared Polis has failed the people of Colorado and our democracy.”
