Washington, D.C. — Today, Andrew O’Neill, National Advocacy Director of Indivisible, released the following statement after ICE shot and wounded Wilber Rafael Graces Perez in Austin, Texas while working as a DoorDash delivery driver:
“The ICE shooting of Wilber Rafael Graces Perez is a devastatingly familiar reminder of what we already know: ICE continues to wage violence against Black and brown immigrants. The inhumane, anti-immigrant MAGA agenda coupled with empowered federal ICE agents do not make cities safer, it incites violence and invokes fear. We will not accept the normalization of ICE harming immigrant communities in Texas and across the country. We must stand up against this violence, hold ICE accountable, and demand justice for Wilber and his family.
“Immigrants deserve dignity and due process. We join LULAC, Grassroots Leadership, and Worker’s Defense in demanding a full independent investigation, including the release of body camera footage, information on Wilber’s condition and his medical care, and we demand that ICE halt all operations in Austin and across the country as we await real answers as to what happened. The ICE officer must be held accountable, as well as Wilber’s employer, DoorDash, who continues to remain silent as their delivery drivers are hunted down by ICE. Our hearts and thoughts are with Wilber, his loved ones, and the Austin community. Enough is enough.”
