Washington, D.C. — Today, Andrew O’Neill, Indivisible’s National Advocacy Director, released the following statement as Congressional Republicans introduced new versions of the dangerous SAVE Act:
“Republicans are back with the same voter suppression scheme under a new name — and Democrats must hold strong and vote no.
“The original SAVE Act stalled in the Senate last spring because it was exposed for what it is: an anti-democratic attempt to stop millions of eligible voters from participating in our elections. Now, MAGA extremists are reviving it ahead of the midterms, introducing two new bills designed to do the same thing: silence voters and rig the electorate.
“These bills would require in-person proof of citizenship to register to vote, effectively eliminating online and mail registration and blocking countless Americans from the ballot box. This isn’t about election security. It’s about deciding who gets a voice, and Republicans are betting they can win by making sure fewer people are allowed to vote.
“We’ve seen the consequences of laws like this before: eligible voters kicked off the rolls, people turned away not because they aren’t citizens, but because they don’t have the ‘right’ paperwork on hand. That harm is not accidental — it’s the goal.
“Democrats stopped this once. They must do it again. There can be no compromise, no procedural dodge, and no cover for voter suppression. These bills deserve a firm, united no.”
