  • Indivisible on the Louisiana vs. Callais SCOTUS Decision: ‘This is a coordinated attack on multiracial democracy’

    Apr 30, 2026

Washington, D.C. — Today Leah Greenberg, Co-Executive Director of Indivisible, released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana vs. Callais:

“Yesterday the Supreme Court gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, stripping away one of the last remaining safeguards against racially discriminatory maps and eviscerating a cornerstone of civil rights protections. As Justice Kagan warned in dissent, yesterday’s decision renders Section 2 ‘all but a dead letter’ in most cases —  a devastating blow to the foundational law that helped dismantle Jim Crow and expand Black political representation.

“This ruling gives states a green light to silence Black and Brown voters, dismantle hard-won representation, and redraw maps without meaningful accountability. From Congress to state legislatures, representation for Black and Brown communities is at risk while power becomes further entrenched in the hands of the few. This is not an isolated decision — it is part of a coordinated attack on our electoral system.

“This is also a stark reminder that the Court itself is at the center of this crisis. When an unaccountable majority can so dramatically rewrite bedrock civil rights law, it raises urgent questions about the concentration of power on the bench. Serious reforms — including structural changes to the Court— are the bare minimum. We also need clear and transparent investigations into the partisan corruption of this court, and accountability for trampling on our most foundational constitutional rights.

“Voters should choose their politicians, not the other way around. But this decision moves us further from that promise and marks a day of deep consequence for the Court and the country. This moment demands an organized, immediate response. Elected leaders at every level must act to protect voting rights wherever possible — in legislatures, in the courts, and at the ballot box. This is a coordinated attack on multiracial democracy, and it demands an organized, immediate response.”
