Washington, DC — The Indivisible Project’s associate policy director Elizabeth Beavers released the following statement after the House of Representatives voted to end U.S. participation in the Saudi-led Yemen war:
“Today, the House of Representatives took a giant step forward in ending our involvement in Yemen’s conflict and taking back our democracy. The people of Yemen have suffered for too long at the hands of U.S.-made and U.S.-supported bombs, and Congress has been too willing to give up responsibility. With today’s vote, Congress is reclaiming its power and reining in the war-making powers of the president.
“The vote today will help return power to Congress and the people. It’s a step towards a stronger democracy that holds our elected leaders accountable. Indivisible commends the House for this historic vote and urges the Senate to quickly follow suit. If passed, this would mark the first time in history that Congress has sent a war powers resolution to the president to end a conflict. This is huge. It’s what the people want and what we need.”
