The response to the October 7th Hamas attacks, particularly the actions of Prime Minister Netanyahu's government, has escalated into an unconscionable humanitarian crisis for the Palestinian people in Gaza, which experts at Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, and Human Rights Watch have classified as a genocide. For years, we have witnessed a brutal war of ethnic cleansing, starvation, and the indiscriminate targeting of civilians. This war has not secured Israeli safety, because peace is not Netanyahu’s goal—its control and political power. And it’s come at staggering cost. The relentless bombing campaigns, the deliberate obstruction of humanitarian aid, and the forced displacement of millions have created unimaginable suffering.
The Ongoing Moral Catastrophe in Gaza and US Complicity
The Israeli government’s ongoing war of devastation in Gaza represents a profound moral catastrophe, and Indivisible stands in unwavering solidarity with all civilians impacted. We unequivocally condemn Hamas' horrific terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the brutal murder of Israeli civilians and the taking of hostages. And we unequivocally condemn the avalanche of war crimes committed against Palestinians in Gaza nearly every day since. There is no justification for such atrocities.
Donald Trump prominently promised to bring an end to this war—and unsurprisingly that was a blatant lie. His approach to this conflict, much like his ally Netanyahu, reveals a chilling disregard for peace and civilian safety. Trump is a wannabe authoritarian, and his actions demonstrate a dangerous willingness to escalate conflict without regard for human life or democratic values. Beyond the war continuing, Trump has rolled back sanctions on Israeli settler violence and even joined in Netanyahu’s military campaign against Iran by illegally launching missile strikes. This has done nothing to stop the indiscriminate strikes on Palestinian civilians, the starvation conditions across much of Gaza, or the US complicity in violations of international and humanitarian law. Everyone in the region has been made less safe through Trump’s actions.
Regrettably, the Biden administration's approach to this conflict was a moral and strategic failure. Biden’s policies did not end the war, betrayed our values, undermined U.S. and international law, and exacerbated bitter divisions within his own coalition. Generously, Biden naively believed he could convince Netanyahu to limit civilian casualties by committing unconditional support and taking a bear-hug approach. This was obviously flawed and morally dubious at the time, and each day since October of 2023 has only offered further evidence that the advocates for this strategy fundamentally misunderstood the stated goals of Israeli military and political leaders. They discredited themselves and the United States on the world stage, and contributed to tens of thousands of avoidable civilian deaths, including thousands of children.
Indivisible reiterates that all civilian life is precious, and we unequivocally oppose the continuation of this devastating war. The scale of death, destruction, and suffering in Gaza is unconscionable. We refuse to accept the daily onslaught of human rights being systematically violated and international law being disregarded, and join the chorus of human rights experts and advocates condemning the genocide unfolding before us.
We continue to call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages, and the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Political and military leaders who perpetuated the rampant violations of international and domestic laws must be held to account.
Furthermore, Indivisible demands an end to U.S. complicity in this unfolding tragedy. We call for an immediate cessation of all U.S. military support for Prime Minister Netanyahu's war, including military equipment and arms shipments. These weapons, funded by American taxpayers, are directly contributing to the escalating death toll of innocent Palestinian civilians and fueling a conflict that serves no long-term U.S. interest.
Domestically, the US perpetuating the razing of Gaza has made Jews, Muslims, Israeli-Americans, and Palestinian-Americans less safe—and given fuel to discrimination and hate. We’ve seen a frightening rise in antisemitic and Islamophobic hate crimes, violence, and white nationalist rhetoric—including from prominent political leaders. The Indivisible movement commits ourselves to a vision where all of us, across faiths, nationalities, and races, can live together in harmony and security. Anyone fanning the flames of hateful, discriminatory movements in the US is an opponent of that vision.
Regrettably, leaders in both the Republican and Democratic party also weaponize bad-faith claims of antisemitism in an attempt to shut down pro-Palestinian speech or political power. This cynical weaponization uses Jewish people as political pawns in order to further the Administration’s ultimate goals of consolidating power and chilling free speech. It’s particularly appalling given the rampant white nationalist antisemitism of the MAGA movement, from Trump to his followers.
Indivisible rejects false binaries that posit that one community’s safety can only come at the expense of another’s. We know that solidarity is not a finite resource, and treating it as such only empowers those who would prey on our fears to divide us. Our values compel us to speak out against injustice and to advocate for peace, human rights, and accountability—both abroad and at home.
