Washington, D.C. — Today, Indivisible’s Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director, and Texas Native, Ezra Levin released the following statement on the lethal flooding in Texas that has killed over 100 people, including more than 20 young girls:
“To call the flooding in Texas a crisis is an understatement. It is a shameful tragedy. Over one hundred fellow Texans—including more than twenty young girls—have died. People’s homes have been swept away overnight. I grew up in Buda, Texas, and I see my neighbors in every single one of these victims. I’m holding each of these families in my heart.
“I was in Texas with my toddler son during the 2021 power crisis—when Cancun Cruz was shamed into returning home to his state. Back then, we knew the state lacked preparedness because Governor Abbott disbanded commissions and departments that were tasked with oversight and reliability. Hundreds died—tragic and shameful.
“Let me say it straight: this tragedy was made possible by Trump, DOGE, and the MAGA Republicans who have a grip on Texas—at every level. Trump’s DOGE budget cuts stripped funding for infrastructure and emergency preparedness that would have saved lives. Republicans at the state and county level dismissed expert warnings, and refused to invest in flood sirens and warning systems that would have saved lives. Just last week, Trump’s Supreme Court decided to grant Trump the authority to fire federal workers who respond to emergencies like this one. Republicans do not care about our safety. They put us all in danger.
“As a native Texan, every moment of grief is met with anger. Every deadly disaster passes, and there is no accountability. The allegedly ‘pro-life’ governing party—from the White House to the city councils—consistently choose to ignore and undercut systems that protect human life. It’s bullshit. We owe it to every single victim that has died because of this negligence, crisis after crisis, to do drive these failed leaders out of office. Cruz can stay in Greece—Texas doesn’t need him.”
