Washington, DC — Today, Former Vice President Joe Biden announced his selection of California Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate for the 2020 Presidential election. The historic selection will make Harris the first Black and Indian-American woman nominated for Vice President by a major political party, and only the third woman in American political history.
“Vice President Biden has made a historic selection and wise choice for a governing partner in Senator Harris. Not only will Senator Harris help to energize key constituencies across battleground states and strike fear in Mike Pence ahead of their fall debate, but she will help to carry out the most progressive agenda of any Democratic president once the long, national nightmare that is the Trump presidency is finally over," said National Political Director, Mari Urbina. “This groundbreaking selection is the right choice for our nation and corrects an ill that has long denied women of color a seat at the highest echelons of our government. Senator Harris' ambition, integrity, and character are sure to be a guide post for a new generation of women leaders. As Shirley Chisolm said, ‘If there's not a seat for you at the table, bring a folding chair.' We're glad to see Senator Harris took her advice.”
“During her time in the Senate, Kamala Harris has fought to protect DREAMers, co-signed Senator Sanders’ Medicare for All bill, and worked tirelessly to hold Trump administration officials accountable for corruption. That dedication to just policies is a quality that has been sorely missed in our executive branch,” said Leah Greenberg, Co-Executive Director of Indivisible. ”At a time where our country's commitment to its most vulnerable residents is facing its strongest test since the Great Depression, she has pushed for an aggressive response to the pandemic and has taken the lead on reforming police departments and addressing racial inequities on the federal level. We’re excited to see her take these fights and more into the presidential campaign.”
Senator Harris is no stranger to the Indivisible movement. During the Democratic Presidential Primary, Indivisible frequently surveyed its followers and engaged with Presidential hopefuls. While Senator Harris withdrew from the race before Indivisible published its Presidential Scorecard, Harris consistently ranked high in flash polls of the movement. She was Indivisible's second choice for Vice President.
“The historic nature of choosing Senator Kamala Harris cannot be overstated and is truly a bridge to the future of the party and of our nation. The selection of a Black woman for the second highest position in the country reflects a commitment to a more reflective and representative government--a government that is truly of, by, and for the people,” said Greenberg. “Senators Harris has built a career of advocating for those most ignored by our government--the LGBT community, people of color, and immigrants. We’re excited to get to work for the Biden-Harris ticket.”
