Washington, DC — Last week, Elon Musk began falsely accusing Indivisible and a number of other grassroots groups of causing violence at Tesla dealerships. Over the weekend, the claim spread through the right-wing internet, and last night, Jesse Watters on FOX News amplified the lie about Indivisible. Today, Donald Trump declared that violent protests against Tesla should be considered ‘domestic terrorism.’ This is a clear attempt to weaponize lies to justify a crackdown on peaceful dissent. Indivisible’s Co-Executive Director Ezra Levin issued the following statement:
"The richest man in the world doesn’t want you to criticize him. He’s using his puppet, the President of the United States, to threaten the tools of the state against peaceful Americans expressing their opinions. Donald Trump and Elon Musk are trying to outlaw dissent and silence regular people who threaten their power. This is nothing less than an authoritarian assault on our First Amendment rights.
"Indivisible has always been committed to nonviolent action. Every guide, every training, every event we organize reinforces peaceful protest and de-escalation. Indivisible is firmly opposed to any acts of violence or vandalism. But let’s be clear: Trump and Musk don’t actually care about violence. If they did, they’d start with their own movement—the one that stormed the Capitol, attacks activists in the streets, and fuels political violence daily.
"Trump and Musk want us to feel weak and alone so that we stay quiet. They’re scared of peaceful dissent because they know most Americans oppose their illegal and unconstitutional attack on our government. Tough shit. We’ll see them in the streets, in the halls of Congress and at district offices across the country—and we’ll make damn sure they hear our voices loud and clear.”
