Washington, DC — In response to Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s latest attempts to smear Rep. Ilhan Omar by pledging to remove her from the House Foreign Affairs Committee if named Speaker, Indivisible’s co-executive director Leah Greenberg issued the following statement:
“Since her election to Congress in 2018, Rep. Omar has been subjected to an unparalleled stream of hatred from Republicans and Republican media, from vile smears to threats on her life. All of this has been fueled by Republican leadership, who seek to gain political advantage by weaponizing Islamophobia and bigotry even as they themselves foster anti-semitism within their own ranks.
“A Speaker can’t unilaterally remove members of a committee, and Kevin McCarthy knows that. McCarthy is just trying to shore up support from the most MAGA parts of his party by showing them that he’ll happily keep attacking one of their favorite targets.
“Rep. Omar has been a valuable voice on House Foreign Affairs for nearly four years now, and she will not be silenced by these vile attacks. If McCarthy thinks he’s going to be able to divide Democrats with this smear, he’s mistaken. This is exactly the kind of flimsy attack on our members that Republicans will be launching regularly over the next two years, and we’ll be united in their defense.”
