Everyday Organizing Support

This training covers the basics of Indivisible as an organization – how it came to be, its theory of change, and some of its core programs and resources.

This is a basic training on recruiting for Indivisible groups and events that can be independently led within a group to help build capacity.

Context 

Tools for Building Inclusive Groups are a part of Indivisible’s Trainings-to-Go, a set of readymade trainings that are designed for staff and groups to independently use and deliver when needed. Unlike a traditional slides-and-speaker-notes training, the materials in Tools for Building Inclusive Groups are designed to guide group members through workshop-discussion style conversations in which they can reflect on their current ways of working and identify actionable steps to make their work more inclusive. From accessibility practices to racial equity to financial inclusion, how can we make sure our Indivisible spaces actively welcome anyone who walks in the virtual or physical door? Access, equity, and inclusion don’t come about through a one-off training or conversation, but can and should be cultivated over time through practice. Try starting with one below and then see where your group wants to move from there.

How to use these tools

Work through the following questions in a designated meeting on the topic. As with other kinds of meeting spaces, you may find it helpful to

• Designate a facilitator – ideally someone comfortable keeping a conversation on track and supporting people in their processing.
• Distribute an agenda in advance along with the specific resource being covered (that is, any of the links above).
• Identify any space norms (e.g. “take space, make space”) that your group practices or finds helpful for complex conversation, and include those in the session.
• Decide in advance whether the conversation is for the whole group or a more focused group of leaders/active members.

You can also pick new topics, readings, or issue areas – no need to stay confined to those listed here. Indivisible’s Trainings Team will also add more over time; to suggest a topic, email training@indivisible.org.

This training prepares Indivisibles to hold an effective 1:1 (“one-on-one”) organizing meeting, one of the foundational tools in group growth and overall organizing work.

“Coordination” is a legal term defined by federal election law and FEC regulation. Once a group has been exposed to nonpublic strategic info, any money the group spends on that election will likely be treated as a coordinated expenditure.
