Indivisible on Trump’s Indictment
Washington, DC — Today, Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Indivisible’s Director of Democracy Policy, released the following statement:
“It’s official: we’ve entered the era of Donald Trump’s criminal accountability. Whatever happens with this indictment, the ground has shifted for Trump and those who would do anything to see him get re-elected.
“Trump’s response has been and will continue to be unhinged, because he knows his fate is in the legal system’s hands, and not with his MAGA sycophants in Congress. As activists, we worked for years to hold Trump accountable, and now we must demand that his Republican enablers answer for the leader of their party and the criminal charges that he’s facing.
“Every Republican, including the 18 currently holding seats in congressional districts Biden won, has played a part in shielding Trump from the consequences of his crimes. They've advanced the corrupt and hateful agenda that he ran on, and turned a blind eye as he attempted to coerce our allies overseas into digging up dirt on his political rivals, spread conspiracies and misinformation to overturn the 2020 election, and incited a deadly riot at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. As we speak, these representatives are standing by supportively as their fellow Republicans in the House try to intimidate New York’s district attorney and protect Trump one more time.
“Those Republicans who refuse to condemn Trump are nevertheless sending a clear message to their constituents and to the American people: they think Donald Trump is above the law, and they don’t care what criminal activity he engages in as long as he takes the White House in 2024. They do not care about our democracy and they do not care about the American people. They only care about power.”
