Indivisible Calls For Democrats to Reject Trump-Era Immigration Policies
Washington — In response to the unveiling of legislative text of the immigration and asylum provisions of the security supplemental, Leah Greenberg, co-founder and co-executive director of Indivisible issued the following statement:
“It shouldn’t surprise anyone that MAGA Republicans will use any opportunity to inflict cruel, inhumane policies on the most vulnerable people, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing now. In exchange for temporary security assistance and foreign aid funding, they are attempting to extract permanent policy changes to our immigration and asylum systems - all while admitting this is all politics for them. It’s an indictment on the Republican party that Republicans in the House and Senate are turning on this bill - even after extracting massive concessions from Democrats - now that Trump and his acolytes are agitating against it.
“Indivisible opposes bringing back failed Trump-era immigration policies, and we oppose handing a future Republican president new powers to inflict their cruel agenda on migrants and asylum seekers. These policies will not address the humanitarian concerns and challenges at the border, but instead will double down on an ineffective and dangerous enforcement-only approach. The bill also fails to offer pathways to citizenship for Dreamers, farm workers, and other longtime residents in our communities.
“Republican demagoguery about the border and immigrant communities is profoundly toxic to our politics and dangerous for our communities. Democrats must stand up against both this hateful rhetoric and these cruel policies, and draw a sharp contrast between their vision for an inclusive society and the division of Trump and the MAGA movement. Fighting back against authoritarianism means we must lean harder into our shared humanity, but this bill falls short. Indivisible encourages Democrats to reject this bill.”
