WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, Indivisible issued the following statement on Donald Trump’s latest abortion lie (that he wouldn’t sign a nationwide abortion ban):
“Sure, Don. His nominees to the Supreme Court also called Roe ‘settled law.’
“The Republican blueprint for America's future under Trump's guidance is no secret. In just the last year, Republicans have introduced more than 380 state bills attacking reproductive rights. One in three women now live in states where access to abortion is restricted or outright inaccessible. The day after Trump’s last statement, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled to revive their 1864 near-total territorial abortion ban, which criminalizes performing or helping someone obtain an abortion unless necessary to save their life.
“And despite Trump’s comments, this anti-abortion campaign is not confined to the states. Only weeks ago, the Republican Study Committee, representing the entirety of House GOP leadership, pushed a budget forward that reads like a dystopian blueprint for reproductive health: a national abortion ban without exceptions for rape or incest, the perilous concept of fetal personhood threatening to unravel IVF access, and a disturbing push to ban mifepristone—a critical component of medication abortion. They’ve moved to revoke policies that support veterans in accessing vital abortion care and are relentless in their efforts to defund contraception for low-income and uninsured women.
“Ahead of the recent Supreme Court oral arguments, 145 Republican members of Congress openly supported a move to drastically cut access to the abortion pill. This amicus brief is just the tip of the iceberg. Project 2025 lays bare a more sinister plan for a second Trump term: to aggressively use the Comstock Act as a wrecking ball against reproductive rights, regardless of individual state laws.
“The MAGA-driven blueprint behind Project 2025 is crystal clear in its tactical silence—they've advised Trump to avoid mentioning Comstock, betting on public ignorance about its implications. Their advice to him is cynical yet straightforward: Denounce a federal ban, stay quiet, and ride the wave of misinformation back into the White House. That’s exactly what he’s doing, and no one is falling for it.”
