Washington, D.C. — Today, Indivisible’s Managing Director and Lead for the Battleground Arizona Program, Mari Urbina, released the following statement in response to the certification of the Arizona Abortion Access Act (Prop. 139) for the ballot:
“Over the last year, the conservative MAGA lawmakers and judges in Arizona tried to roll the state’s abortion laws back to the 1800s. Since then, activists and people from across the state have fought tirelessly, knocked on thousands of doors, and gathered hundreds of thousands of signatures to protect their freedom and access to reproductive rights. Today, all that hard work has officially put the Arizona Abortion Access Act (Prop. 139) on the ballot,” said Mari Urbina, Indivisible’s Managing Director and Lead for the Battleground Arizona Program. “Despite what other shenanigans Republicans in Arizona try to pull off to block abortion protections, the people of Arizona have made it clear that they broadly support reproductive freedom and will not back down as these MAGA extremists try to take it away. We said we’re going to put an abortion rights amendment on the ballot in Arizona, and we did. Now, we’re going to focus on getting it passed and making sure Republicans from Donald Trump to Kari Lake all the way down to state legislators and state judges pay a steep political price for stripping away our freedoms. Indivisible’s so proud to be part of this movement, and we’re continuously in awe of the dedicated leaders on the ground. We believe through their conversations and collective power, they will protect Arizona and save lives across Arizona. ”
Indivisibles and activists in Arizona successfully gathered enough signatures to put abortion protections on the 2024 AZ ballot – exceeding the threshold by over 120,000 signatures. The constitutional amendment that will now be on the ballot with Prop. 139 would restore abortion access in Arizona.
Indivisible is one of several big grassroots networks in Arizona mobilizing with Arizona for Abortion Access to gather these signatures, with 1,600 volunteers signed up to take on this signature-gathering work. They’ve formed a big, creative network stretched all across the state -- coffee shops, tattoo parlors and people’s homes have already become little campaign hubs for people to pick up petitions.
