Washington, D.C. — Today, Indivisible’s co-founder and co-executive director Ezra Levin issued the following statement on the Senate’s passage of the continuing resolution:
"Today, Republicans advanced a funding bill that gives a blank check to Trump and Musk to continue their coup. It is a naked attempt to cement their control over our futures. It’s inexcusable that 10 Senate Democrats gave them the votes to pass it.
"The message from Indivisibles to lawmakers has been simple: Do not give Trump and Musk a blank check. Republicans who voted for this bill have shamefully betrayed their constituents. But rather than fight back, Senator Schumer led Democrats down a winding, incoherent path that led to total surrender. Americans will pay the price.
“Schumer and 10 Senate Democrats just gave away their leverage and surrendered to Trump and Musk. Let’s be clear - a symbolic vote against final passage is meaningless after willfully giving up real leverage on the cloture vote. When the stakes are this high, we need strong Democratic leadership – not cowards who cave at the first sign of GOP pressure.
"This is not a fight between progressives and moderates. The House Democratic caucus was practically unanimous in their opposition to this bill. Unions, the grassroots, the good-government wonks all said a shutdown would be preferable to this extortion.
Schumer and these 9 Democrats are fracturing the Party and the opposition by siding with the enemy. Trump is thrilled. Mike Johnson is gleeful. Musk is free to continue his reign.
Indivisibles are organizing in their communities every day because they believe in our democracy and are willing to defend it - they deserve leaders who share that commitment.
As Congress returns home for Recess, Indivisibles all over the country are planning to mobilize by hosting empty chair town halls and protests in front of GOP district offices to ensure everyone knows Republicans are responsible for this blank check for Musk and Trump. See a list of events taking place next week here.
We’ll be convening Indivisible leaders from every state over the weekend and will announce our plans for accountability soon. We hope Schumer has a great time on his book tour.
