New York, NY — Today, Indivisible’s co-founder and co-executive director Ezra Levin released the following statement in response to Andrew Cuomo’s general election bid for New York City Mayor, despite an overwhelming loss in the primaries:
“As per usual, Andrew Cuomo just can’t take no for an answer. Democratic primary voters rejected him resoundingly, and now he’s launching a cynical general election bid funded by Bill Ackman and other Trump-supporting donors. It’s exactly the kind of amoral pivot we expect from a guy who’s tenure was marked by supporting Republicans in Albany, appointing conservative judges, promoting his book while hiding nursing home deaths, and resigning in disgrace for sexual harassment of over a dozen women. Cuomo made a career out of dividing Democrats. It's how he ruled in New York, and apparently it's how he plans to spend his waning years.”
“The difference between him and Zohran Mamdani could not be clearer. While Cuomo is courting right-wing megadonors, Zohran is meeting with New Yorkers, building a tent of diverse, multigenerational supporters, and writing the playbook for Democrats to win in 2026 and beyond. Zohran Mamdani is the only Democrat on the ballot this November, and he’s a damn good one.
“This isn’t about Cuomo anymore. He’s a disgraced loser who lost and will lose again. This is now about the rest of elected Democrats in New York. Every day they decline to endorse the winner of their own damn primary, they undermine the Democratic Party. We should have spirited debates about the future of the party in our primary elections - that’s healthy. But afterwards we dust ourselves off, we shake hands, and we head into the general election united. Any elected Democrat who refuses to do that is earning their next primary challenge. Stop making excuses and throwing tantrums because your guy lost. Grow up, get serious, unify the big tent party, and go kick some MAGA ass in the general. ”
Last week, over a dozen Indivisible groups sent a letter to Democratic Leadership, demanding they endorse Mamdani:
Many Democratic lawmakers, including leaders like Schumer and Jeffries, have so far stopped short of endorsing Mamdani despite his overwhelming victory on June 24. Others have not only withheld support but have made racist remarks about Mamdani. Last week, a coalition of over a dozen Indivisible groups sent a letter to Schumer, Gillibrand, Hochul, Jeffries, and Jacobs to push them to get off the sidelines and stand with Mamdani in this consequential race (see more from POLITICO).
“Mr. Mamdani was able to successfully bring together a diverse, progressive and engaged coalition of voters to score this win. By focusing on key issues of affordability, accessibility and empathy for our fellow New Yorkers, he was able to motivate crucial voting blocs, especially young people, to not only vote but volunteer in droves. This campaign knocked on 1.5 million doors across all five boroughs, a staggering display of support for a candidate that was polling in the single digits six months ago. The party should be celebrating and analyzing this win as we prepare for the fight of our political lives in 2026. At a time when Democrats have struggled to connect with voters and build credibility, supporting and learning from Mr. Mamdani’s playbook is paramount.”
“…If we are to stand up to nefarious and compromised leaders like Eric Adams, we need to do so as a united front. Now is the time for the party and its leaders to support its nominee and we urge all leaders who are still outstanding in their endorsements to do so immediately.”
For background:
Indivisible groups have a proven track record of helping Democrats win key races in New York – including Suozzi in NY-03 – even when they aren’t completely ideologically aligned. Now, Indivisibles are calling on lawmakers to put aside any differences and back Mamdani for the good of the entire city.
In addition to supporting and working with Democrats like Schumer and Jeffries, Indivisibles regularly push them to fight harder against Trump. Earlier this year, Suozzi pointed to overwhelming phone calls from Indivisibles over the OMB cuts, and last week Indivisible BK protested outside Schumer’s Brooklyn home demanding he use all tools to stop the Trump tax cuts. Indivisible groups also hold Republicans accountable – including protests outside Malliotakis’ offices, calling out Lawler for his inaccessibility, and a recent die-in outside the Trump Tower.
