Washington, D.C.—Today, Ezra Levin, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of Indivisible, issued the following statement after news that Texas House Democrats left the state to break quorum and block passage of an extreme Republican gerrymander:
“Texas Republicans just launched one of the most shameless power grabs in modern history — and Texas Democrats responded with courage and defiance. They walked out, left the state, and broke quorum to stop an extreme gerrymander designed to silence communities of color and hand Donald Trump permanent control of the House.
“This is what it looks like to fight for democracy like your life depends on it — because it does. Texas Democrats are risking political careers, enduring personal sacrifice, and refusing to be complicit in Trump’s authoritarian playbook. They are showing the rest of us what it means to use every tool at your disposal.
“But they cannot win this fight alone. There are 15 Democratic trifecta states — states like New York, California, Illinois, and New Jersey — that hold real power to fight back. If Republicans gerrymander mid-decade, Democratic governors and legislatures must be ready to redraw our own maps in response.
“The stakes could not be higher. If we meet an authoritarian power grab with polite politics, we lose. This is the moment to stand up, fight back, and match the courage Texas Democrats are showing today. Our democracy will not survive if we do anything less.”
