Washington, DC—This morning, the Indivisible Project’s national political director Maria Urbina released the following statement:
“Harley Rouda beat the odds, and he just proved to the Democratic party and the country that meaningful engagement of the grassroots is a winning strategy. We are proud to call him an Indivisible candidate.
“Harley Rouda earned the support of Indivisible groups in the 48th with his tenacious commitment to addressing systemic problems in our society: from gun violence, to offshore drilling that puts clean water at risk, to the corrupting influence of money in politics. Harley’s opposition to taking corporate PAC contributions and meaningful engagement of the grassroots proved to be a winning strategy in the fight for real representation for the 48th district that’s not beholden to corporate lobbyists or special interests.
“This victory belongs to Indivisible CA48. They built a truly innovative public vetting process and came out of it with an endorsement that reflected their values. The series of public forums Indivisible CA48 held had a huge impact on this key national race. It pushed candidates to go deeper and engage with issues that mattered to them—from health care to gender equity and racial justice—and helped narrow the field in a challenging race for Democrats.
“More than anything, we’ve been proud to see them doing the work to get Harley elected. We are excited to work with them to get Harley elected in November.”
Harley Rouda is one of the 23 candidates that the Indivisible Project has endorsed at the national level. To earn Indivisible’s national endorsement, a candidate must clear a tough three-stage process that requires buy-in from local Indivisible group members at multiple points. A candidate cannot be endorsed without a strong platform and the enthusiastic support of informed, energized voters across their district.
