Washington, DC—The Indivisible Project’s Associate Policy Director Elizabeth Beavers released the following statement on the firing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions:
“Trump’s decision to fire Jeff Sessions and replace him with a political hack is a brazen effort to interfere in the Mueller investigation. This crosses a red line. Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker has previously outlined in great detail how he would impede the Mueller investigation if he got the chance. Trump just gave him that chance. Put simply: Whitaker cannot oversee this investigation. He must commit to letting Mueller run his probe independently, or recuse himself.
“Jeff Sessions has spent the last two years tearing down our civil rights. He enthusiastically led our national government’s persecution of its most vulnerable and backed Trump’s white nationalist agenda. He should have never been confirmed to lead the Dept. of Justice. But we can’t move backward. We need an Attorney General that, unlike Sessions, is dedicated to protecting all Americans and defending our democracy.
