Washington, DC — Following the first night of the second round of Democratic primary debates in Detroit, the Indivisible Project surveyed the Indivisible community via SMS text message.
The survey asked respondents which candidate most impressed them during the debates. Indivisible received more than 5,000 responses from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The Indivisible Project’s national political director María Urbina released the following statement following the debate:
“Tonight, we saw a debate that centered on progressive ideas. Sen. Warren, Mayor Buttigieg, and Sen. Sanders, and others used the stage to push for big ideas and demonstrate why the candidates spouting Republican talking points aren't being serious about achieving real change. Although some expected tonight to be a cage match between Warren and Sanders, the debate was ultimately a lesson in how progressive ideas about big structural change are the only way to beat Donald Trump.
“Sen. Warren continues to impress Indivisibles with her depth of policy knowledge and forceful defense of a progressive vision for America. Last month, she won our post-debate poll with no other top-tier candidates on stage; her performance tonight, while sharing the stage with other powerhouses like Sen. Sanders and Mayor Buttigieg, showed that she has lasting strength among progressive activists and can cut through the noise on a messy debate stage.
“Mayor Buttigieg had a strong showing in this debate and Indivisibles heard his message. He was able to speak clearly on why Democrats should run on big, bold ideas and not shy away from good policy just to satisfy Republican lies. Sen. Sanders is still one of the boldest defenders of progressive ideals in the Democratic primary and tonight we never saw him back down as the policies he’s fought for were attacked.
“Our survey shows that the Indivisible community, more than anything, wants progressive ideas to remain center stage in the primaries and wants candidates to fight for these ideas.”
